Buddhila Wickramasinghe
Buddhila is a Master of Science graduate from La Trobe University currently in the first year of her PhD. She is a member of the Hypertension and Immunobiology Division at the Centre for Cardiovascular Biology and Disease Research working under Associate Professor Antony (Bill) Vinh, Professor Grant Drummond and Dr Maria Jelinic. Continuing from her master’s project, her PhD aims to determine the role inflammasome-derived proinflammatory cytokines, Interleukin-18 and Interleukin-1β play in the pathogenesis of hypertensive chronic kidney disease. Since the beginning of her research career in 2020, Buddhila has developed a variety of animal handling and laboratory techniques which include uninephrectomy surgery and flow cytometry. In this short time frame, she has already presented her work at several national conferences. Apart from the lab work, she finds pleasure in writing letters to her year 6 pen pal raising awareness about the importance of scientific research. Buddhila also likes to take on high school students to help them experience a day in the life of a biomedical scientist.
